Here are two maps that make you go hmmmm. Second largest continent and second most populous.

Notice below that it really is darkest Africa. Even the parts of the continent with light are not really considered Africa (I kid, I kid, but it is South Africa (Dar has its first strip malls from South Africa open - it's like Walmart) and Egypt). Not a lot of light for 1 billion people.
