bububu

One of the nights that we stayed in Zanzibar, we stayed at an inn (the one with the dog and monkeys playing around) in the town of Bububu. Bububu is called Bububu because the train makes this sound when it comes around the corner (it sounds more like a train when you pronounce it like all other Swahili words, with the accent on the penultimate syllable).

And speaking of place names, there is a place north of Dar called Picha ya Ndege (Airplane Picture) because at the bar in town there used to be a huge picture of an airplane.

Motorcycles are called pikipiki's because of the sound they make.

That is all.

I'm learning all sorts of things I never imagined I'd know. Bet it's better firsthand. :-)
