There is a belief in the west that when a team plays for a championship (ie. the Pittsburgh Steelers) and loses, they take the t-shirts that say "World Champions" or whatever and send them to Africa. I don't believe that this actually happens. Maybe before the ubiquity of superphones and the internets it happened but now it would just be too hilarious and embarrassing if there was a photo of a village full of people wearing shirts that said, "Toronto Maple Leafs - World Champions!".
Many a shirt is here after being donated from the west though. What I love about the t-shirts is that often times they are the most ironic t-shirts ever, yet not worn with a hint of irony. Indeed, many a hipster from home would be buying shirts off of peoples backs. My favourite so far has been a Canadian Boy Scout shirt with some of the badges still on.
On donating clothes bound for Africa.
I thought this guy's blog had an article on t-shirts that inspired me but I can't find it.
